What will my white hairs look like if I color my hair?

I have very dark brown hair but when I was younger I had a lot of red highlights. I was thinking about coloring it a little but I've got a few white hairs mixed into my brown. I'm not trying to cover up my white hairs, just color the brown, but I don't want the white hairs to go pink or anything either. Suggestions?

You're too funny! I now have fairly dark brown hair (lost my red highlights after chemo) with a large patch of gray on the top of my head and a sprinkling of gray over my ears. I use a temporary color (not a permanent color so I have no roots to grow out) and this is fairly gentle. I put the color on my top-of-my-head gray patch for about 15-20 minutes, then cover the rest of my hair with the color, following the suggested time. My gray is very resistant to take the color, so I split it up like this. The effect is very soft, natural looking, and as it washes out (in supposedly 12 washings or so), the hair colored for only 20 minutes goes natural first, but the gray (colored for twice that amount of time) retains the color! When my hair is wet, the added reddish highlights look clown orange but when dry it's a soft shade; because of the way my gray is patched on the top of my head, I end up with reddish highlights throughout my hair - looks like an expensive salon color job. This time around, for some unknown reason, the gray is retaining the color pigment - almost like it's stained but I don't have a root line to show.

I think the main thing to be careful of is to not go too dark - as we age our skin doesn't look as fresh and what was your natural color when young is probably too harsh now - especially as an all-over color can tend to look flat. On this note, if your gray is resistant to color, this could be a plus in this instance - you'll end up with different tones and shades in your hair (but a root line is a dead give-away to a color job.

You choose a box of color that you like and your hair will turn out that color. Make sure it says it will cover grey/white.

They are not going to go pink i work in a hair salon as a washer (i wash and blow-dry and put perms in hair) Your hair will turn what ever color you are trying to color it.

Not to worry. They will look just like the rest of your hair, based on the color that you choose. Choose a dark auburn color and it should turn out great.

it wont fully cover your hair..

and if you have it treated enough to finally get it to take the color it will be completly fried..

then it will be ruined and you will have horrible roots when it grows back..

If you are coloring your hair at home, look for something like L'oreal Preference that specifically addresses coloring grey/white hair. If you are just trying to more or less match your natural hair color and blend in the white hairs, the white hairs should turn out a little lighter than the rest, which actually will look sort of like highlights !

Try some temporary color at first, it washes out in about 6 shampoos, to see if you like it, if you do try it at home.

Have fun !

The white hair is void of natural pigment, so whatever color you are changing to will be added to that hollow hair shaft, a lot. The non-pigmented hair will really "grab" the color, suck it up like a straw, as opposed to the brown hairs that already contain some pigments. To avoid drastic color variation between your naturally white and naturally brown hair, have the colorist lighten your hair all over first, then apply the color (red, brown, whatever). Since it is impossible to separate the white hairs from the rest, you really don't have a choice to leave the white hairs white, unless you simulate the white streaks with extremely platinum highlights after the coloring. BTW, any variation in color of the hair on your head is very preferable, otherwise it will look flat and maybe dull. This is why people get highlights, and also why box color is touting color variation right now.
