The hair on my dogs nose is falling off and it's very pink. Any ideas of the cause?

We've ruled out bacteria, allergy, and scratching. We've put a fench around the bushes to see if the problem is her sticking her nose in and rubbing the hair off. I've never seen this on a dog.

She's a smooth coat boarder collie in very good health...except her nose.

Sometimes, it's because of the bowl that u use. If u feed or water her in a plastic bowl, try using a metal bowl. Believe it or not, labs noses turn pink instead of black if you feed them from plastic bowls. You have to use metal bowls for them. Try that b4 going to expensive vet.

Normal aging in dogs.

Ask your vet!

possibly Mange.

Same thing with my dog... they told us that either it's

1. bacteria- which you said yours wasn't

2. allergies- ditto

3. scratching...

4. bites

We caught my dog in the act of trying to eat bees and stuff... maybe that's what is wrong. We put triple-antibiotic ointment on it twice daily. That seems to help. But... let me know if you find out how to help!

The answer is a simple one. Sun Burn. Dogs noses are not meant to be in the sun all day. You may want to get a serious burn cream and apply it until it heals, it will be difficult because the dog will want to lick it off. Then, find a nice thick chapstick with sun screen built in, preferably a non-flavored one, and put a little bit on the dogs nose before you let the it out.

try some hydrocortisone 1% ointment, you can find this at any drug store.

it could be a type of mange. you really should let your vet take a look at her.

It is most definitely SUNBURN and Collies are more prone to getting it and it is called "collie nose"

Q. Can dogs and cats get sunburn?

A. Cats and dogs can get sunburned. Cats with white ears are especially prone to develop sunburn on the tips and edges of the ears. Collies and other dog breeds such as Shetland Sheepdogs, who have no pigment on their nose can develop a condition called 'Collie Nose,' or 'nasal solar dermatitis.' This is actually caused by a hypersensitivity to the sun.

Some pets, whose hair is clipped very short over their bodies or for some reason have sparse hair can also develop sunburn where their skin is exposed. Pets susceptible to sunburn should be kept out of direct summer sun, especially in the middle of the day when the sun is particularly strong.

Sunscreens (SPF should be 15 or greater), including those developed specifically for pets and those containing titanium dioxide as the active ingredient should be used to prevent sunburn. For pets with skin exposed on their bodies, a t-shirt (children's or adult, depending on the size of the pet) can be fitted over the body.

As with humans, animals with skin that has been sunburned are more likely to develop skin cancer, so protection from sunburn is extremely important.
